EDUCATION NEWS

  • Ohio University’s Air Force ROTC Detachment 650 was named Best Small Detachment in the Nation for 2025 for its strong performance in academics, leadership, and community engagement (recognizing Capt Thom Hausler, Maj Drew Rimelspach, and Cadet Seth Booher).  Ohio University
  • Nelsonville-York High School (NYHS) formed two mock trial teams in fall 2025 and won awards at competitions held Jan. 30 at Hocking and Washington County courthouses. The program boosted students' confidence in public speaking and courtroom skills.  Athens County Independent
  • Ohio University's Patton College of Education offers study away programs that teach leadership and self-growth through a 28-day outdoor expedition across North Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia plus a 10-day ecotourism experience in Costa Rica where students learn sustainable practices and engage with local communities.  Ohio University
  • In January, an OHIO delegation visited Malaysia, Thailand and Cambodia to sign new global agreements that will expand research, student exchanges and internships. The trip reinforced long-standing alumni ties and academic partnerships that enhance international opportunities from Athens.  Ohio University
  • Ohio University is addressing student concerns over limited dietary options at Boyd Hall and Nelson Commons. A new dining hall is rumored to open in Shively Hall (aimed at enhancing access to varied menus), as the school listens to calls for better accommodations.  The Post
  • Ohio University Bobcats are planning spring break trips for the break scheduled March 8-14 — some will head to Daytona Beach for a conference while others choose to stay home and relax.  The Post

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • ODNR reported 173 tremors in Southeast Ohio last year and nine quakes so far this year. Researchers say the increase is linked to hydraulic fracking in the Utica Shale and that these shallow, induced events should cause minimal environmental damage.  The Post

HEALTH NEWS

  • Medicare patients in Ohio now need approval for certain outpatient procedures as part of a federal pilot that began in January (WISeR Model) using artificial intelligence to screen requests before doctors decide. The change may cause delays for patients on the list.  WOUB Public Media

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Ohio Bobcats finished seventh at the Bentwater Intercollegiate at Bentwater Country Club in Montgomery, Texas, tallying a total score of +22 over three rounds. Gray Lamont led a strong team performance, and they will prepare for the Donald Ross Collegiate next month in Southern Pines.  The Post
  • Ohio will face Miami Friday at 9 p.m. at Millett Hall in Oxford (a sold-out venue) as the team seeks a boost after its recent loss while Miami battles injuries and remains unbeaten. The nationally televised game on ESPN marks a pivotal moment in this fierce rivalry.  The Post
