  • Athens News printed its final edition on Jan. 14 + after nearly 50 years of free weekly circulation, it now operates exclusively online while The Athens Messenger continues printing local news.  The Post

CULTURE NEWS

  • Young women at Ohio University are redefining Valentine’s Day as a celebration of friendship (with wine nights and crafts) rather than traditional romance. Some plan fun gatherings on Feb. 14 as the holiday evolves into a showcase for quality female bonds over situationships.  The Post
  • Massing debuts their new single Chemicals, blending aggressive guitar riffs with a humorous halftime play-by-play by WSAZ’s Tim Irr. The band performs at The Loud today with Randy & Pet Bandana, and an official music video will follow soon.  WOUB Public Media

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Ohio Honors Conference has opened a call for student presentations on research, creative projects, and community engagement. Proposals are due by Tuesday, Feb. 24 at 11:59 p.m., and selected presenters will join a workshop before the event at the Living Learning Center on March 23 and 24 (prizes included).  Ohio University
  • Ohio University professor Nancy Manring introduces her new book (A World of Wounds) that reframes environmental politics using her background in natural science and conflict resolution. The book shows how most Americans share environmental concerns and suggests ways to foster constructive dialogue in classrooms and communities.  Ohio University
  • Ohio University spent over $200,000 on legal help (from Nov. 2024 to Oct. 2025) as it fights the certification of a faculty union and works on a new contract after a March 2025 vote, though union members say talks about pay are still not starting.  Athens County Independent
  • Ohio University is expanding study abroad and experiential learning programs for regional campus students to build cultural skills and professional readiness. Upcoming trips include a Paris-London program set for Summer 2026 (with programs already popular in Costa Rica, Panama, and the United Kingdom) to offer global learning opportunities.  Ohio University
