COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A recycling, tires and clean up event will take place in Albany on March 28 (volunteers invited). Community members are encouraged to join efforts to maintain a cleaner area.  Athens County Independent
  • Chesterhill Produce Auction Buying Club 2026 registration is now open for residents to receive a weekly bag of seasonal produce from local farms at one of seven pick-up spots. Registration also offers an option to donate a share + help support local food access initiatives.  Athens County Independent

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A brush fire on Radford Road burned two acres late Wednesday, and ten fire trucks from Athens and nearby responded to douse the flames and protect a mobile home and barn while investigators look into a backyard burn that violated the seasonal ban.  Athens County Independent

  • New Leaf Marketplace reopened on March 11 at its new location in the Athens County Community Cares Resource Center at 10 W. Washington St, offering a store, drive-thru, and local prepared foods while supporting SAOP’s workforce development program (now with a six-month client placement).  Athens County Independent

SPORTS NEWS

  • The MAC Men’s Basketball Tournament kicked off March 12 in Cleveland with Miami and Akron favored, while Ohio (from Athens) aims to bounce back after a tough season. The Bobcats plan to compete strongly as they face top teams in their matchup.  WOUB Public Media
  • Ohio Women’s Basketball won a MAC quarterfinal over Central Michigan on Wednesday, March 11 in Cleveland, with Tabeling scoring a career-high 33 points. The Bobcats will face Miami OH at 10 a.m. Friday — a rematch following last week's upset in Athens.  WOUB Public Media
