COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Athens County observed Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month with a march on Tuesday when over 100 local residents walked from Baker University Center to the county courthouse to support people with developmental disabilities. County board members and advocacy groups met on March 11 to plan upcoming events including film screenings and a fest—underscoring the community’s commitment to inclusion.  Athens County Independent

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Monday, March 10, 2025, crocus chrysanthus were seen swaying in a patch in Millfield as bees quickly visited the blossoms. The photo taken by Al Maloney highlights one of nearly 90 species (members of the iris family) in this early sign of spring.  Athens County Independent
  • Passion Works is set to renovate the vacant Ambassador Laundries building on Stimson Avenue to expand its art studio for local artists with and without developmental differences. The 11,000-square-foot space will get a ceramics workbench, a stage, and updated accessibility features — the studio has raised $2.1 million toward a $5 million renovation goal.  Athens County Independent

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Ohio University is offering many spring break study away programs that let students choose to stay in the country or go abroad. One option is Alternate Spring Break in Appalachia, a service-based program that costs $50—covering lodging, food and transportation.  The Post

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Ari Faber is running for Athens City Council in the Democratic primary on May 6—one local disabled, transgender and Christian woman endorsed him for his work at United Campus Ministry and his efforts to set up a warming center along with support for a safe haven for gender-affirming care.  Athens County Independent
  • On March 12 2025, about 70 community members gathered outside Cutler Hall at Ohio University’s College Green to protest Senate Bill 1 which would end diversity equity and inclusion programs and bar full-time faculty from striking. Speakers including a local professor and United Campus Ministry director urged the university to use a period of 90 days to plan required changes if the bill passes — a measure that could reshape campus support programs.  Athens County Independent
  • Gov. Mike DeWine gave his State of the State address on Thursday — he offered few new proposals and focused on ideas in his new two-year budget. He noted record job gains, a new workforce playbook led by Jim Tressel, and plans for cell phone bans and life skills lessons in schools while lawmakers gave mixed reviews.  WOUB Public Media

SPORTS NEWS

  • Ohio's men's basketball team ended its season with a 90-85 overtime loss to Toledo in the MAC quarterfinals—coach Jeff Boals called the loss tough after playing only nine full games this season. The team, once expected to lead the conference, saw its hopes for a championship fade with this game.  The Post
