EDUCATION NEWS

  • Ohio University professor Ryan Fogt leads research on Earth’s climate and trains meteorology students in the Scalia Laboratory for Atmospheric Analysis—his work spans studies in Athens and even a run around the South Pole for a photo.  Ohio University
  • Ohio University announced winners of its annual Three Minute Thesis competition where 32 students competed in the semifinals and eight advanced to the finals in February. First-place winner Nisha Singh in Physics and Astronomy earned People’s Choice—she will compete at the national 3MT contest on April 4 in Indianapolis.  Ohio University
  • Dr. Uzoma Miller of Ohio University was named the 2025 MAC Outstanding Faculty Award for Student Success winner in recognition of his dedication to teaching and advising students. He has served as an assistant professor since 2022 in African American Studies—highlighting his commitment to creating a supportive learning environment.  Ohio University
  • The Trimble Local School District plans to lay off about a dozen teachers due to a projected $1.6 million deficit and has notified the labor unions as required. The board will vote on the layoffs on Monday the 24th — leadership and classroom support face potential setbacks.  Athens County Independent
  • Ohio University faculty had a busy winter season with awards from the Ohio Arts Council—two Fine Arts professors earned Individual Excellence Awards—and new research published in Science, Nature Communications and the Journal of Phycology. Faculty pursuits ranged from early hominin studies to digital technology for energy applications and inclusive education, with several honors including NASUP awards and a Fulbright Canada Research Chair.  Ohio University
  • Ohio University’s Spring 2025 Undergraduate Commencement Ceremonies will be held on May 3 at the Convocation Center on campus with sessions starting at 9:30 a.m. and 4 p.m., and celebrated alumnus John P. Gainor will deliver the keynote address. Gainor, who retired as CEO of International Dairy Queen in 2017 and earned a Medal of Merit from the university in 2016, said he is honored to share his advice with the graduating class.  Ohio University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • During Monday night’s meeting, two Athens City Council members raised concerns about the proposed roundabout at SR682 and 56 that includes a sidewalk planned south by White’s Mill but very little extension north toward Kershaw Greene—council members noted that funding and issues with train tracks pose challenges before construction begins this summer.  Athens County Independent
  • Representatives from the Athens City Commission on Disabilities said that arguments over crosswalk types are wasting time because brick crosswalks do not meet ADA rules — they ask the city to use stamped concrete as planned to ensure safe access for everyone.  Athens County Independent
