Good morning, Athens. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 28th of March.
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Ohio University professors said that a federal freeze on grant funding on Jan 27 and limits on projects labeled as diversity disrupted research reviews from agencies like NSF and NIH (leaving staff, students, and international scholars, some on Fulbright, with reduced support). They warned that these delays and new travel restrictions may harm research progress and future career paths if the situation does not improve soon. Athens County Independent
- ➤ Ohio University faculty voted 453 to 189 to form a union — union organizers plan to start contract negotiations this spring after the results are certified on April 17. Athens County Independent
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ In November 2023, Ohio voters passed Issue 2 to promise cannabis tax revenue for local communities, but state lawmakers are now proposing House Bill 160 and Senate Bill 56 that will reduce funding for city and county budgets—forcing local governments to cover extra costs. The bills also add criminal penalties that will raise enforcement expenses and strain community funds. Athens County Independent
LIFESTYLE NEWS
- ➤ Lucky is a friendly, nearly 3-year-old male mixed breed dog weighing 63 pounds who was found with Max on Sharp Run Rd in Stewart on February 6th and has spent nearly two months at the Athens County Dog Shelter without a foster or adoption match—volunteers report he is calm, affectionate, and a quick learner who would thrive with a quieter canine companion.
