COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today the Athens County Independent announced that its founding mascot, Scoop, is retiring and moving to a recess cave near Wayne National Forest as it introduces Kicker the Raccoon as its new face. Scoop looks forward to spending time bird watching—painting and learning guitar skills, and the staff urges residents to approach Kicker with caution.  Athens County Independent
  • A series of announcements from government and community groups detailed key deadlines and events for the week of April 1–4, including the election letter submission cutoff on April 15, audits of the Athens County Agricultural Society, and new council appointments in Nelsonville—along with updates on road work, traffic advisories, and available free services such as food pantries and health clinics. Additional community events, including a Walk, Talk and Roll at the courthouse, a film festival at the Athena Cinema, and other local workshops and screenings, were also highlighted to keep residents informed.  Athens County Independent

  • On Monday, March 31 the Anna Jinja Show had a talk with Yui (who has lived in Japan, Canada and North Carolina) and Shei Sanchez about cultural stereotypes and feeling pressure to change. Poet and teacher Shei Sanchez wrote a poem inspired by their talk on who they are.  WOUB Public Media

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Dr. Eddith Dashiell was inducted into the Ohio Communication Hall of Fame on March 27 at the Ohio University Inn—honoring her over 30 years at Ohio University and the Scripps College of Communication—and she will retire on June 30 as Dr. Hans Meyer takes over on July 1.  Ohio University

SPORTS NEWS

  • Ohio Softball swept the doubleheader against Kent State with a 2-1 win in game one and an 8-2 win in game two at the Ohio Softball Field on Tuesday. The Bobcats led with a two-run home run by catcher Emma Hoffner in game one — they will travel to Akron on April 5 while Kent State hosts Ball State.  WOUB Public Media
  • Ohio baseball played Morehead State Tuesday night and scored one run after seven scoreless innings as its pitching kept the game close until a late home run did not secure the win. The team now prepares to bounce back in a three-game road series against Northern Illinois from Friday to Sunday—aiming to improve its offensive execution.  The Post
  • The Ohio Bobcats baseball team struggled as a late bullpen collapse erased their leads in several close games, leaving many questions about their performance.
