COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Athens County will host many seasonal events this April that offer outdoor fun, art sessions, and family activities. The schedule includes KidFest on April 5, an international street fair in Athens on April 5, a marathon on April 13, and more events through April 28 — giving residents plenty of ways to welcome spring.  Athens County Independent

CULTURE NEWS

  • On March 29th, over 50 community members gathered for the unveiling of a new window mural at Mount Zion Black Cultural Center in Athens—created by Keith Wilde with local artists and students to honor five historic Black figures during the church's stained glass renovations. The event featured volunteer work amounting to 538 hours, live music performances, and plans to later use the mural as a traveling exhibit.  Athens County Independent
  • Over 50 community members gathered on Saturday at Mount Zion Black Cultural Center to celebrate the unveiling of a new window mural that temporarily replaces stained glass windows during renovation — honoring historic Black figures in Southeast Ohio. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Hailey Hollinger is a journalism student from Canton who has worked with WOUB since her freshman year and plans to pursue a career in sports journalism after graduating this May. She found her passion for reporting when covering a football game at Liberty Union — her work at WOUB has included anchoring, hosting, and investigative projects on local government.  WOUB Public Media

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On April 3, state lawmakers left Ohio food banks with about $15 million less than their current spending level, providing them $22.5 million annually amid rising demand & federal cuts that increased pressure on their resources.  WOUB Public Media
  • This past weekend, the League of Women Voters of Athens County celebrated its 75th anniversary at Athens Uncorked — honoring lifetime members, the County Board of Elections, and past Wiseman Award winners—. The group will host a presentation and small group discussion on bridging the partisan divide at 6:30 p.m. on April 23 at the Athens Community Center while preparing an exhibit of LWVAC memorabilia for display in the Mahn Center at Alden Library.  Athens County Independent
  • Athens Township Trustees are holding a special meeting today at 2:00 p.m. at the Township Hall at 313 W. Union Street to review bids for repairing a road slip on S. Blackburn Road and award a contract. They will meet again on April 11 at 2:00 p.m. at the same location to receive a progress report from Eden Marketing on upgrading the township website.  Athens County Independent
