  • On Sunday, April 12, hundreds gathered at the Athens Armory (which filled to capacity) to honor late Tony Sylvester on what would have been his 74th birthday; the event featured a jazz funeral procession ending at Tony’s Tavern and led Athens Mayor Streve Patterson to declare it Tony Sylvester Day.  Athens County Independent
  • Regional Little Caesars locations, including the Athens store at 906 E. State St., are hosting the 'Pizza Pizza Paws' fundraising initiative for law enforcement K-9 units through April.  The Athens Messenger

  • At the Music Industry Summit in Athens today, local alumnus Henry Allen shared his journey from touring with CAAMP to playing with Ollella at a Tiny Desk Concert (he credited network connections made at Ohio for shaping his career).  Ohio University
  • Jackie O’s Pub & Brewery has introduced three new brews created by OHIO seniors in (the Art of Craft Brewing: The Athens Case Study). The drinks debuted during Ohio University’s Moms Weekend on Apr. 10 and are available for tasting today from 6-11 p.m. at the Taproom.  Ohio University
  • Boots Riley will show his new film 'I Love Boosters' at the 53rd Athens International Film and Video Festival this April. The film, his second feature, uses surreal storytelling to explore corporate greed through satire (similar to his praised film 'Sorry to Bother You').  Athens County Independent

  • Residents in Athens have seen unexpected power bill hikes from slamming scams, where energy marketers switch providers without consent. AEP advises customers to check bills and call its hotline (1-800-672-2231) if they notice unusual charges.  Athens County Independent

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Ohio University's Roderick J. McDavis Residence Hall (591 beds) nears completion on South Green and will open this August for Fall Semester. The facility is part of the Housing Master Plan and features modern amenities and a terraced outdoor green space despite rising costs.  The Athens Messenger
  • Human interest staff and students at Ohio University shared reflections on a school year of highs and lows as classes and exams wrap up in the next two weeks. Their anecdotes (including a humorous moment on Jeff Hill) emphasize personal growth during a pivotal campus season.  The Post

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Avery’s Law expands the powers of Athens County dog wardens to classify and remove dogs that show dangerous, vicious or nuisance behavior. The law now requires owners of dangerous dogs to secure liability insurance (costing $100,000) and install proper fencing to keep the community safe.  Athens County Independent

HEALTH NEWS

  • Local doctor Dr. Sergio Ulloa from OhioHealth urges Athens residents to resume exercise gradually as spring arrives — he recommends starting with short walks and warm-ups before gradually increasing activity so exercise becomes a consistent, healthy habit.  Athens County Independent
