Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 19th of April.
Good morning, Athens.
WOUB began its Spring Radio Pledge Drive on April 18 and will be on air on April 24 and 25 — asking listeners to support local public media — with a special 3X match for new donors and a drawing for a cooking class prize at a local culinary studio.
A woman working at Memorial Auditorium said she was inappropriately touched around 9:13 p.m. on April 17 when an unidentified heavy set white man—described as having short dark grey hair and facial stubble—grabbed her left breast, and the Ohio University Police Department has not found him.
Terry Moore, a 1970 graduate in the Bachelor of General Studies program, was presented with University College’s Outstanding Alumnus of the Year Award on April 15th at the spring awards banquet—recognizing his lifelong dedication to education and the Ohio Fellows Program.
After winning a vote with over 70 percent support, the new faculty union at Ohio University said it followed the law by holding members-only meetings before the election—one meeting provided a negotiation update and the other split discussions between internal business and open election issues. Ohio University filed an objection with the State Employment Relations Board, arguing that all meetings should be open to every employee.
Hadley Fain—winner of WOUB’s Our Ohio High School Documentary Film Festival in 2022—is now a junior at Ohio University’s Scripps College of Communication, where she majors in visual communication and graphic design.
She said her high school film opened her eyes to new opportunities in Athens and she will start a photography internship in Cleveland this summer.
Athens attorney Jesse Branner Hittle argued before a state appeals court on Thursday that the city’s plastic bag ban, which stops merchants from giving out bags, properly uses its home rule.
The 4th District Court of Appeals will issue its decision in the coming weeks—reviewing how the ban fits with state law on plastic bag use.
The Ohio Bobcats beat Miami 3-1 on Friday at Ohio Softball Field—sweeping the twin bill with strong pitching and a late home run by Brenna Farmer.
