Good morning, Athens.

Athens officials proposed raising the city income tax from 1.95% to 2.25% on May 6 to cover rising expenses such as higher salaries and benefits, and they warned that if voters reject the measure, staffing may be reduced by not filling vacancies — a move designed to keep the city's general fund on track.

A new report from the Ohio River Valley Institute shows that while the House budget increases K-12 funding statewide by $550 million, Appalachian schools will lose ($565.8 million) over the next two years due to incomplete funding of the Fair School Funding plan.

The Senate will hold hearings next week before Gov. Mike DeWine signs the budget by the end of June.

Former Ohio guard AJ Brown announced his commitment to the Florida Gators on Thursday morning—ruling out a return to the Ohio Bobcats next season.
