- ➤ Lodi Township Trustees will host Clean Up Day (9 a.m. to 1 p.m.) on Saturday, May 16 to help maintain local public areas. Residents are encouraged to join the event. Athens County Independent
- ➤ An Athens shelter spotlights Moss, a 1-year-old shepherd/husky mix weighing 30 pounds found on Monserat Ridge Rd in Millfield. The shelter invites locals to foster him or call 740-593-5415 to help him explore the best pup cup options in town. Athens County Independent
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Pre-registration is open for the Faculty as Mentors: Reimagining Learning at OHIO program, a new certification designed by faculty to strengthen mentoring practices. The Canvas course launches in June (offering $500 stipends for both the knowledge acquisition and implementation phases) for eligible faculty. Ohio University
- ➤ Professor Dan Denhart is retiring after 42 years of shaping productions and mentoring students at OHIO’s School of Theater. He leaves a lasting local legacy, securing equipment grants and designing the new shop (for future student projects) while planning to remain in Athens with his family. Ohio University
- ➤ Ohio University will honor 212 international students set to graduate in the spring. The graduates, coming from many countries, have used campus resources (like International Student and Scholar Services) to help them succeed in Athens. The Post
- ➤ Rising Appalachia (a Millfield-based nonprofit) runs a nine-week summer camp where children learn survival skills, environmental education, and Appalachian traditions to build belonging and ease mental challenges. The camp fills all 316 spots within days and serves youth ages 6 to 18 in Southeast Ohio. The Post
- ➤ Graduating seniors Scarlett Fried and Eli Kaltenecker showcased their capstone films at The Athena. Fried screened 'Rooted' while Kaltenecker's period piece 'The Misfired Affair' premieres today at 7 p.m. (each project reflects a hands-on approach to filmmaking). The Post
- ➤ Ohio University student Luke Davenport led groundbreaking research in chiral nanomaterials that promises new advances in UV photonics. He developed the work at NQPI under Professor Martin Kordesch, using innovative glancing angle deposition techniques to enhance ultraviolet absorption. Ohio University
- ➤ Today, 48 OHIO students joined a four-hour flood simulation workshop organized by UPSA and the Department of Geography in collaboration with the Army Corps, NDR, and OEM to learn community resilience. Participants assumed specific roles and made quick decisions to help their mock communities during disasters. Ohio University
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Athens City Council discussed expanding the Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area (DORA) to the West Side and will vote on closing parts of Campbell and Grant streets on Sunday, May 17 during Porchfest's closing performance. The council will decide Monday, May 4 at City Hall. Athens County Independent
- ➤ Residents are invited to share input on the DORA program (which relaxes open container laws in Uptown and nearby corridors) through an online survey to guide future decisions. Athens County Independent

- ➤ Mackenzie McRee, a standout college golfer known for her fast play and team leadership, won her only individual title and sparked a team turnaround before planning to leave Athens after her fifth year—she also overcame a mid-season back injury to stay involved. The Post
