  • The Joe Burrow Foundation and Hocking College launched 740 Rescue Kitchen on April 11 in Nelsonville to convert surplus food into free meals for community members—partners include La Soupe and local suppliers, and the initiative aims to reduce waste while addressing food insecurity.  Athens County Independent

  • Holly Maynard, an OHIO Southern graduate, is set to begin her local teaching career after gaining hands-on experience and strong mentorship at Ohio University Southern. She will balance her work with personal milestones—her wedding in September and plans to build a new home.  Ohio University
  • International student Tyrone Oppon, a sophomore enrolled at Ohio University and the University of Bayreuth, has found community in Athens through the Walter Center’s Leadership Launchpad initiative and is learning that effective leadership means inspiring others—an insight he will take with him as he balances his studies between continents.  Ohio University

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Daniel Sturmer, a geosciences professor, said the landslide on Joneswood Drive shows how heavy rain and thawing can cause clay-rich soils to shift in Appalachia. The slide has been active for 16 days and he advised homeowners to watch for signs like leaning fences and cracking foundations — conditions that may prompt professional inspections if the weather brings more rain.  Athens County Independent
