EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Ohio University students attended Nationwide Day at Nationwide Insurance headquarters in Columbus, where they learned about cybersecurity operations, tech careers and 2026 internship opportunities. They also joined dynamic presentations plus a scavenger hunt that offered a behind-the-scenes look at the company. Ohio University
- ➤ Ohio University has recognized four regional higher education faculty members (Greg Obi, Jennifer Steele, Kim Ciroli and Michael Koop) for their exceptional contributions to teaching, scholarly activity and service. The awards honor their dedication to education and their positive impact on students. Ohio University
- ➤ Former national news correspondent Martin Savidge said his hands-on work at Ohio University and WOUB gave him the practical experience that set him on a successful journalism career—he later covered major conflicts and earned several prestigious broadcasting awards. He noted that the real on-air work with WOUB helped him master skills he used throughout his career. Ohio University
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Athens voters rejected a proposed .03% increase to the city’s income tax to 2.25% in the primary election with 835 votes against and 625 in favor — only about 11% of registered voters participated. Mayor Patterson said the city will watch revenue and expenses closely while council members warned that the lack of extra funds may force cuts to city services. Athens County Independent
- ➤ Nelsonville voters rejected Issue 4 on May 6—53.90% voted against the amendment that would have changed the city charter to a mayor-council government—and local leaders now plan to work on a transition as council terms expire this winter. Athens County Independent

- ➤ In Tuesday’s primary, Athens voters selected city council candidates as Megan Almeida won the 1st Ward seat with 55% of the vote and Paul Isherwood was chosen as the new at-large representative while Beth Clodfelter and Jessica Thomas were re-elected. Uncontested races for treasurer, president and the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Ward seats advanced to the Nov. 4 election—highlighting both new faces and continuing leadership in local government.
