COMMUNITY NEWS

  • New to You thrift store will mark its 50th anniversary on Saturday, May 9 through an in-store celebration featuring raffles, treats, and giveaways. The shop, which has supported foster youth since 1976, operates daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.  Athens County Independent

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Ohio University Southern held a pinning ceremony for the BSN Class of 2026 on April 30 at Bowman Auditorium. Eleven nursing graduates received their pins as reflections on compassion and commitment were echoed in awards honoring both students and educators.  Ohio University
  • Construction on the new Athens High School continues despite delays from wet weather and extra shale beneath the site — contractors estimate a finish by Feb. 19 with move-in planned for spring break to catch up on a roughly 15-day delay.  The Athens Messenger
  • Ohio University's College of Business will host the 21st Midwest Association for Information Systems Conference (at Walter Hall Rotunda on the Athens campus) on Thursday, May 21 and Friday, May 22. The event features keynotes, AI workshops, and networking opportunities that bring together experts and students from across the nation.  Ohio University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Athens officials will hold an open house at the Athens Armory (1 Armory Street) Tuesday, May 19, to discuss the Uptown streetscape and utility relocation project. City, design, and contractor representatives will gather community feedback from 1–3 p.m. on planned improvements.  Athens County Independent
  • City officials addressed damage at Johnny Appleseed Park after heavy equipment and debris from the utility relocation project turned much of it into a dirt pile (including a leaning memorial tree) and removed the grass. They promised a full restoration once the work is finished.  Athens County Independent

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • A local shelter is featuring Phideux as the dog of the week. Phideux is a 1-2 year-old neutered lab mix who dreams of becoming a chef and opening a restaurant called 'Phideux's Favorites' (call 740-593-5415 for adoption or foster care).  Athens County Independent
