EDUCATION NEWS

  • Ohio University has named Dr. Haley Duschinski as its senior advisor for global affairs (effective May 18) and she will lead the Office of Global Affairs in advancing international partnerships and student support as part of the university's dynamic strategy.  Ohio University
  • Athens City School District is adopting a new method for teaching writing to boost K-12 literacy. The change is part of a statewide effort (aimed at increasing student success) in public schools.  The Athens Messenger
  • Construction on the Violet L. Patton Center for Arts Education is progressing steadily at Ohio University in Athens as crews build a new space for creative learning—promising enhanced arts programs for local students.  The Athens Messenger
  • Three Ohio University grads will send their space farming experiment to the ISS Tuesday, May 12. The project will test watercress growth in microgravity using FME mini-labs, with astronauts releasing clamps — a crucial step toward developing space-based food production.  Ohio University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Friday, May 8, the City Council approved transferring a half-acre at the end of Hudson Street to Community Building Partners for eight affordable homes. The city will fund the sale with a $2 million Welcome Home Ohio grant and sell the homes to low-income buyers at no more than $180,000.  WOUB Public Media

SPORTS NEWS

  • Former Ohio University head football coach Brian Smith sued the university on Friday, May 8 for wrongful termination, arguing that firing him in December over alleged misconduct—an extramarital affair and campus alcohol use—bypassed proper process.
