Good morning, Athens. Here's your local news at a glance for Sunday, the 11th of May.

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The mayor of Athens said the income tax increase was voted down, leaving few ways to cut spending since most of the budget goes to paying city workers (the vote count was 835 to 625). He said officials may not replace workers when they leave and could cut street work funding in the next budget cycle (the city must do more with less).  WOUB Public Media
  • State officials dismissed Ohio University’s challenge filed last month after faculty voted to unionize—certifying the vote so the union can begin negotiating a contract while the university reviews its options within 15 days.  WOUB Public Media
