- ➤ A monthly farmers market will start in June in Nelsonville on the first Wednesday of each month from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Athens County Community Cares Resource Center parking lot, where vendors will offer fresh local food and Operation Full Belly coupons to help people with low income — the pilot project by Job and Family Services supports local farmers and may let residents use SNAP and WIC benefits — as part of an effort to expand food access. - ➤ On Tuesday, May 20, the Athena Cinema in Athens showed The Legend of Ochi, an offbeat family fantasy film about a young girl who befriends a small cerulean creature she was taught to fear (set on the fictional island of Carpathia). Film scholar Dr. Gordon Briggs praised the film's striking visuals and creative effects in his review (using practical effects and CGI). WOUB Public Media
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Ohio University rising junior and WOUB student employee Trevor Gillam is one of three recipients of the 73 West State Award, a scholarship for communication students (established by former WOUB student Bill Brand) that honors community ties and leadership. Gillam said the award helps him invest in his future in media as he takes on directing and mentoring roles at WOUB. Ohio University
- ➤ Ohio University has partnered with Southern State Community College to create clear transfer pathways that let SSCC students move from an associate degree to a bachelor’s degree. The agreement also includes an RN-to-BSN track so students can study subjects like human services, journalism, and nursing either online or in-person. Ohio University
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ The Athens City-County Health Department received a $12,000 grant (to support its mosquito surveillance program) from the Ohio EPA and will use the funds for intern pay (covering mileage and supplies) to help counter rising mosquito activity as the climate changes. Athens County Independent
