Good morning, Athens.

The Athens County Humane Society will host its 31st annual Garden Tour fundraiser on Sunday, June 8 where visitors will pick up a brochure at the Convention and Visitors Bureau at 667 E State Street and use it to explore various private gardens.

Tickets and raffle entries can be purchased to support animal welfare services—such as low-cost spay, neuter clinics and pet aid programs—all funded by community donations.

Authorities announced that Athens will host its first Ohio recreation economy conference on July 22 during a two-day event — featuring guest speakers and off-campus excursions led by Ohio University — that will explore outdoor recreation trends in Appalachian Ohio.

Ohio University will begin a transition for the Office of Global Affairs as Provost Dr. Donald Leo will convene a task force in the fall to review its international portfolio and conduct a needs assessment.

Gillian Ice will serve as interim associate provost until June 30 and, starting July 1, Haley Duschinski will serve as Provost Faculty Fellow to oversee international programs + Cary Frith will manage day-to-day operations until a new leader is hired.

Ethan Herx explains that the idea of untouched wilderness is a myth because indigenous peoples have shaped the land for thousands of years, with studies showing early human influence on our environment.

He notes that policies like the U.S. Forest Service’s 10 a.m. rule have worsened wildfires+ and erased key Native cultural histories, including those tied to Athens’ traditional Adena, Hopewell, Osage and Shawnee lands.
