COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Tickets for the Bounty on the Bricks event have been on sale since Monday, June 1. The multi-course dinner fundraiser benefiting SE Ohio Foodbank takes place on Saturday, Aug. 8 on Court Street in Athens (early bird pricing ends June 5).  Athens County Independent
  • Recovery Connections of Southeast Ohio will wind down operations due to a lack of sustainable funding. The organization begins transitioning on June 1 and will close by June 30 while connecting participants with other local resources.  Athens County Independent

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Bobcat Boutique operates in Room 120 in the Academic Building at Ohio University Southern to offer free attire for job interviews. Founded by Dr. Joy Shytle, it is open Mondays from 8 a.m. to noon and Tuesdays from 2 to 5 to serve students and community members.  Ohio University
  • Children ages 1 to 18 can get a free lunch at participating public libraries from June 1 to Aug. 7, with service available Monday to Friday during designated midday hours. The program is sponsored by Hocking Athens Perry Community Action Regional Food Center & the Ohio Department of Education.  Athens County Independent
  • Beginning Thursday, June 4 through July 30, families in need can pick up a week’s supply of peanut butter, jelly, and bread at the Alexander Schools front elementary parking lot from 10 a.m. to noon. Offered by Athens County Children Services, the program helps offset summer food costs.  Athens County Independent
  • Alexander Junior/Senior High School released its 2025-26 fourth quarter honor roll for 6th- through 11th-grade students. The list recognizes those earning All A for Academic Excellence and A/B for Academic Honors (full details were provided) as part of the school’s academic reporting.  Athens County Independent
  • Ohio University will merge select degree programs in subjects such as geography, music, and theater this fall to comply with AOHEA requirements (pending state and higher commission approvals). Current students will follow catalog options while new applicants receive updated guidance at orientation.  Ohio University
  • The Ohio School Boards Association will host a public education town hall on Tuesday, June 9 at the Athens City School District Central Office on Burg Drive in Chauncey. The panel will feature board members, superintendents and treasurers — registration is not required.  Athens County Independent

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Athens Public Transit offers free bus rides from Nelsonville to the Athens City Pool this season until April 2027, with buses departing at even hours (8 a.m. to 6 p.m.). The pool opened May 23 and welcomes swimmers with updated open swim hours.  Athens County Independent

HEALTH NEWS

  • Athens City-County Health Department partners with local groups to offer a free healthcare event at Heritage Hall at Ohio University. It is held from Aug. 1 (8 a.m.-5 p.m.) to Aug. 2 (8 a.m.-2 p.m.) with a disability session on July 31 (6-8 p.m.), offering screenings and immunizations.  Athens County Independent
  • Ohio University professor Kevin Lee received a grant from the American Heart Association on Monday, June 1 to study how vaping and nicotine pouches may break down fat tissue into acids that could harm heart function + his research will pinpoint the molecular links between nicotine use and heart damage.  WOUB Public Media
