GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Athens residents are worried about a proposed city ordinance that would change the zoning of over 5 acres on Hooper Street from single-family homes to apartments, saying the change may bring noise, environmental issues and traffic dangers. Councilmember Alan Swank said the project will go through a Title 41 review, and a developer—Hill Tide Partners—has shown interest, with the ordinance set for a third reading at Monday’s special session.  WOUB Public Media
  • Athens City Council approved the final $932,000 payment for the new fire station headquarters and moved extra funds after a cyber scam delayed an earlier payment — council members questioned the additional $210,000 in costs. At a public hearing, residents raised concerns that the proposed rezoning of over 5 acres on Hooper Street for an 80-unit affordable housing project would worsen traffic and road safety — with critics urging a site visit to review the road conditions.  Athens County Independent
