- ➤ An extra $2 million from the state will let Athens turn the old Sunset Motel on Columbus Road into a homeless shelter with a playground, paved road, recreation center, 31 rooms, and 47 beds. Plans will be finished soon and RBC Construction will start work as the shelter is expected to open in the second half of 2026 — the new shelter will help ease housing insecurity for those in need.
