EDUCATION NEWS

  • During Spring 2025, graduate students from the Department of English completed community-based internships with local non-profits to support projects across Athens. Their work included creating outreach materials and promotional events – efforts that will help advance initiatives like the Sunset Shelter Project in the coming months.  Ohio University
  • Ohio University’s AFROTC Detachment 650 earned three top awards and was rated effective during a headquarters inspection where two cadets were named superior performers & its cadets scored highest in leadership at field training among Ohio detachments. The program upgraded its training facilities, used new exercises like Airsoft scenarios and F45 workouts, and will continue to build on these successes to prepare future Air & Space Force officers.  Ohio University
  • Ohio University in Athens has emerged as a leader in integrating artificial intelligence into its curriculum—students are gaining practical skills that will prepare them for future careers.  The Athens Messenger

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Athens Mayor Patterson said he was shocked by proposed state changes that would cut the city’s share of marijuana tax revenue, with studies estimating about $350,000 lost from two dispensaries. Other southeast Ohio mayors expressed concern that the state budget would redirect these funds to cover state projects — reducing money available for local public safety and services.  WOUB Public Media

HEALTH NEWS

  • OhioHealth hosted a drive-thru cancer screening event Friday at the Castrop Health Center in Athens where music professor Jose Rocha and family physician Dr. Jill Porter took part in free skin cancer screenings and received help connecting with insurance and doctor appointments. Organizers provided resources for primary care and hope to make the event an annual offering.  WOUB Public Media
