The Athens County Independent joined the Rural News Network in signing a letter asking for more help from philanthropic groups to support rural newsrooms— the plan calls for a study of local media losses, steps to boost media branding, and training for business ambassadors to strengthen ties with local businesses.

A former Nelsonville clerk, Jessica Mount, was indicted for allegedly stealing about $5,000 in city funds during her work at the Nelsonville Police Department and the Mayor’s Court from November 2021 to December 2022—she faces one felony and two misdemeanor charges and will be arraigned on July 9.
