  • Fred Gibson, known as Gibby, died on June 26 after a brief illness and was a long-time teacher, coach and local sports announcer who set school records and touched many in Athens. A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, July 20 at Ed Rannow Field at Athens High School in The Plains from 3 to 7 p.m.—remarks begin at 5 p.m.—as family, friends and community share stories to honor his legacy.  Athens County Independent

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A change in the state budget on Monday, July 7th shifted the public library fund to a vulnerable line-item, and Athens County Public Libraries now face uncertain funding as director Nick Tepe (who noted that nearly half the library’s budget comes from these funds) warned that local property taxes may need to fill the gap if state funds decline.  WOUB Public Media
