  • First Call Ohio Brew Week begins today on Court Street in Uptown Athens from 4 to 10 p.m.—marking its 20th anniversary with live music and a DORA system for craft beer sales. Later events include a Keg Tapping Ceremony at Jackie O’s Brewpub to honor founder Jon Sparhawk and additional concerts, dances and brew-themed activities across the city.  Athens County Independent

CULTURE NEWS

  • Local sisters Amy Abercrombie and Alexa Ross will perform in each other's theater shows this summer—Alexa Ross directs a French farce debuting at Stuart’s Opera House at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 13 while Abercrombie stages a musical called 'Elinah of the Heights' at Arts West on Aug. 15 and 16 using songs by their grandmother to tell their mother's life. Proceeds from the musical will go to the American Friends Service Committee for humanitarian aid to Gaza.  Athens County Independent
  • A local review of Tim Robinson’s new film Friendship explains how the movie blends horror and humor to highlight a man's deep loneliness— the piece also suggests using fresh bread from Athens Bread Company for a comforting sandwich and warns that federal Medicaid cuts may soon impact SMA research funding.  Athens County Independent

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Athens-Hocking Solid Waste District is hosting a hazardous waste collection day on Saturday, July 19 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Hocking County Fairgrounds to safely collect items like bleach, batteries and paint, and officials plan to move to monthly collections to cut down on improper disposal — a change aimed at protecting sanitation workers and the environment.  Athens County Independent

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Ohio and Athens County Leagues of Women Voters will present a draft ward map to the Nelsonville City Council on Monday, July 14 — the map was finalized at a town hall on June 30 after residents shared their views on redistricting, but the council will not vote on it until the new statutory government begins on Jan. 1, 2026.  Athens County Independent
  • The Athens County Board of Elections informed Nelsonville officials that a candidate cannot run for both charter and statutory council seats as the city shifts to a new government. Candidates for the one-month charter seat must file a form 3-O by 4 p.m. on Aug. 6 while statutory hopefuls must file a declaration of intent by 4 p.m. on Aug. 25 (as advised by legal counsel) (with petitions set for certification on July 15 at 3:30 p.m.).  Athens County Independent
