EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Ohio University student Jess Mitchell received the Charles J. Ping Student Service Award from the Community Campus Coalition at the end of the spring semester as one of 13 students honored for civic engagement. She was also named a Legacy Award winner, which included a $250 donation to a nonprofit of her choice + a nod to her service-learning commitment. Ohio University
- ➤ The Trimble Local Schools board accepted John Hurd’s resignation effective July 31 and named Lindy Douglas as interim superintendent—while the board considers levy options, including a potential ballot measure with a decision due by 4 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 6, to tackle a budget deficit. - ➤ Students from Athens High School presented a proposal to replace plastic lunch trays with stainless steel ones to the Board of Education, and the district is now checking the cost and practicality for current cafeterias and a new high school opening in 2027 (the proposal was developed by Athens ReThink Plastics and showed strong community support). The superintendent and board president said they will meet with food services to review if the switch can happen in phases while keeping student involvement in fundraising and grant applications.
