- ➤ The City of Athens is accepting nominations for the 11th Annual Athena Award to honor community members who improve life for persons with disabilities until (September 2). The award event is scheduled for November 5 at the Athens Community Center (701 East State Street) (5 p.m. until 6 p.m.) and will be hosted by Mayor Steve Patterson and the Commission. - ➤ Athens County is working to be an age-friendly community as fewer babies are born and youth leave the area — the county plans to adjust programs and services to support its growing older population. The Athens Messenger

- ➤ Shagbark Seed and Mill in Athens said federal cuts to a local food program will cost it about $500,000 this year—forcing a layoff of a part-time facility worker and reduced hours for two others—after the program ended in June, impacting its sales to 12 food banks and local growers.
