Good morning, Athens. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 30th of July.
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Pixelle’s paper mill in Chillicothe is delaying its planned August closure until the end of the year to search for a buyer and continue containing a toxic chemical plume from an old spill — officials say current monitoring keeps local groundwater and air safe. The Ohio EPA and HowMet Aerospace will soon add extra wells to check that the chemicals do not move into new areas. WOUB Public Media
- ➤ A local art project painted storm drains feeding the Hocking River to raise awareness of water pollution. Sophia Hoersten, a spring graduate, completed the mural from a contest organized by Ohio University grad student Morgan Riddiford and the city—local partners include the Office of Sustainability and Athens Soil and Water Conservation District, and plans are in place for the project to become annual. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Federal cuts to SNAP benefits are causing uncertainty for the Southeast Ohio Foodbank that serves 10 counties as officials warn that more residents may need extra help when benefits drop. Experts report that work requirements and funding gaps in food programs (with projections of 230,000 losing some assistance and 102,000 losing all) could make it harder for families to secure meals.
