Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 6th of August.
Good morning, Athens.
🏘️ Community
On Aug. 1 at the Athens Community Center, George Wood and his 10-member Ohio Battalion shared videos about their 1,500 mile truck drive from the United Kingdom to Ukraine and fundraised for a Ukrainian unit while planning a February trip to deliver more vehicles.
Dog of the Week highlights Maxx, a 2-year-old husky mix found on Starr Drive in Nelsonville who loves snacks and flapjacks (and plays sax).
The Athens County Dog Shelter seeks to find him a forever home and invites locals to adopt or foster him.
Bunny (the 3-year-old Manx cat rescued in March) is known for his lively hop and friendly nature despite challenges with muscle control and rear leg mobility.
The disabled cat now awaits adoption by a compassionate family at Athens Humane.
🎓 Education
James Beatty, a communications major from Ohio University, is interning at Hopewell Culture National Historical Park this summer to work with park rangers, research Indigenous history, and lead youth programs (honoring the Bruce Lombardo internship).
His practical experience shows how classroom lessons turn into public service.
🏛️ Government
Athens County officials are planning to remove a large log jam from the Currier Street bike bridge to protect nearby infrastructure after county planners expressed concerns about erosion and flooding, following a July meeting with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
