  • Jen Seifert filed a lawsuit in Athens County Court on June 17 alleging that SAOP and its board spread false statements that cost her over $4 million and hurt her business relationships—SAOP has denied the claims and maintained its actions were justified.  Athens County Independent

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Ohio University hosted the 10th annual Summer Law and Trial Institute in July on its Athens campus, where 20 high school students selected from nearly 120 applicants learned courtroom skills and explored legal careers—attending workshops, field trips to Athens Municipal Court and sessions on trial advocacy and constitutional law.  Ohio University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • After Nelsonville City Council repealed Issue 23 on Monday, the city filed a lawsuit in the Ohio Supreme Court on Thursday to remove statutory races from the November ballot+ it ordered the Athens County Board of Elections to respond within three days.  Athens County Independent
  • On Monday night, Athens City Council spent over two hours discussing new fee proposals for permits, parking, sewer and rental units that will be finalized at a future meeting—they also planned to sell two city homes to the local Housing Authority and change the parking garage from metered service to a ticket-and-gate system, with renovations starting next month and expected to finish by December.  Athens County Independent
  • At its Aug. 11 meeting, Nelsonville City Council appointed Dakota Saul as auditor, McCray Powell as treasurer, and Wesley Henderson as council member—appointments made after two resignations and a planned departure. City Manager Fred Holmes will hold an educational session on rental property guidelines today at 6 p.m. in the council chambers.  Athens County Independent

  • Ohio Soccer opened its season with a 2-0 win over Western Kentucky on August 14 at Chessa Field — junior Anna Burchett scored the first goal and junior Kate Robinson helped secure the win with a second goal while the team’s defense kept the opponents at bay. The Bobcats will host the Clemson Tigers on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. at Chessa Field.  WOUB Public Media
