- ➤ Yesterday, August 29th, the Athens City School District broke ground on its new high school in The PLAINS—marking the start of the project. The Athens Messenger
- ➤ Gov. Mike DeWine and local school officials held a groundbreaking ceremony on August 29, 2025—marking the start of construction for the new Athens High School, a three-story, 153,140-square-foot facility set to open for the 2027-2028 school year. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Ohio Department of Transportation announced that the Kanawha River Railroad crossing on State Route 682 between SR 56 and Armitage Road in Athens County will close for repairs Sept. 8—9. Athens County Independent
- ➤ Nelsonville City Council repealed Issue 23 on August 29 and asked the state Supreme Court to remove some ballot candidates—this move may leave the town with little government until new officials are sworn in in January. Council members are running as write-ins under both systems—raising questions about who will serve and setting the stage for a court decision that could spark further litigation. WOUB Public Media
