- ➤ Local public, nonprofit and private groups are working to restore Glouster’s High Street by renovating old buildings and adding new businesses, housing and community spaces. The Glouster Revitalization Organization is leading a project to renovate the historic Knights of Pythias lodge—expected to finish by spring—while SAOP is upgrading its building this fall to boost local economic activity. - ➤ Athens County Court of Common Pleas Judge George McCarthy sentenced Brian Keith Hart, 35, to 15 years to life in prison for killing his father at a hearing on Wednesday. The Athens Messenger
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Ohio University shared its plan for a new theater at the Violet L. Patton Center for Arts Education with the Athens Planning Commission — the proposal will support campus improvements at the College of Fine Arts and enhance arts education. - ➤ This summer, the Chaddock + Morrow College of Fine Arts welcomed Roxanne Schroeder-Arce as its new Dean, and she will use her arts education experience to lead efforts in strengthening local arts programs in Athens. Ohio University
- ➤ Ohio University will host its 17th Science Café event on Sept. 10 when Distinguished Professor Sarah Wyatt presents her talk “Plants in Space: From the Space Station to Mars” at 5 p.m. in the Baker University Center Front Room — the first 50 attendees will receive coupons for free coffee, tea, or hot chocolate. - ➤ At its meeting on Tuesday, Athens City Council lowered the sale price of two city-owned homes to $282,520 for sale to the Athens Metropolitan Housing Authority after correcting a mistake that had included closing costs; Council member Alan Swank objected as Zillow estimates value the properties $60,000 higher, but the vote passed 5—1. - ➤ On Sept. 4, the Athens County Board of Elections denied a protest filed by Nelsonville against certified write-in candidates for the November election. The decision was made amid legal challenges over Issue 23 — with the Ohio Supreme Court set to rule on which candidates appear on the ballot. Athens County Independent

- ➤ Fifth-year senior Davion Weatherspoon, a career Bobcat, was named one of Ohio's four team captains on August 19 after showing versatility by playing both guard and tackle during a record-setting season.
