COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Links is a neutered coonhound found on Thompson Ridge Rd in Athens who weighs about 65 pounds—he is around 1-year-old and known for his lively personality at the local shelter, where you can call about adopting or fostering him.  Athens County Independent
  • The Albany Independent Fair will run from Sept. 17 to 21 at 5201 Washington Road in Albany and will feature tractor pulls, youth exhibits, and a Sunday parade. The fair will debut a frog jump contest at 6 p.m. and a fireworks show at 9 p.m. on Sept. 19—new events planned to add extra fun to a long-standing community tradition.  Athens County Independent
  • Boba finished raising her grey kittens — all now in new homes — and is now looking for a person to adopt her. This personable and silky-soft cat with perfect litter box manners and a friendly attitude toward dogs is available through Athens Humane.  Athens County Independent
  • Local nonprofits are feeding children in Southeast Ohio when school is out—helping families facing food insecurity at home—and they will continue the service until children can return to the regular school meal programs.  The Athens Messenger

CULTURE NEWS

  • ABC Players is staging a production of Agatha Christie's Murder on the Orient Express from Sept. 19–21 in Nelsonville—this play will take place at Stuart’s Opera House at 52 Public Square with shows at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and at 2 p.m. on Sunday while tickets cost $11.  Athens County Independent

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Ohio University Culinary Services said the soon-to-open Raising Cane’s at 63 S. Court St. will not accept meal swipes or Bobcat Cash because technical, financial, and logistical challenges could undercut funding for student workers and union employees— instead, the university will support on-campus dining with its Earl’s Coop to keep profits local.  The Post
  • On September 10, Ohio University eliminated a significant number of IT positions to reduce costs and realign operations — the cuts were announced by CIO Chris Ament via emails sent to IT staff. The university also posted over a dozen new IT positions for current employees to help fill gaps after service reductions.  WOUB Public Media

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Athens City Council discussed funding the Athens County Public Libraries' participation in the Dolly Parton Imagination Library (a program that sends free books to children) at a recent meeting.  The Athens Messenger
  • Athens City Council heard public comments on a pilot program to install up to three Conestoga huts as temporary shelters for unhoused people in a gated parking lot by the Gathering Place on Monday, Sept. 8. Some locals expressed safety concerns while many supported the initiative—officials will hold a public hearing in October to review the project and zoning changes for temporary housing.  Athens County Independent
