  • Donald O. Skinner, age 96, died peacefully at his home on September 9 after a long life in Athens. His Funeral Mass is scheduled for November 1 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul Catholic Church—38 N. College St. with a visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m.  Athens County Independent

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • More than 1,600 deer died in Athens County as the virus called epizootic hemorrhagic disease spreads among local herds—experts call it the worst outbreak in Ohio. The disease may affect the upcoming hunting season and state officials will watch its progress closely.  The Athens Messenger

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City Law Director Lisa Eliason said a review of the zoning proposal for three temporary emergency housing shelters in a North Congress Street parking lot shows legal concerns due to spot zoning. The Planning Committee & Council will meet Monday to consider both proposals and the legal opinion, which may impact future housing requests in Athens.  WOUB Public Media
  • Nelsonville asked the Ohio Supreme Court on Friday to reconsider its decision denying a request to remove Issue 23 candidates from the November ballot — a step the City Council took after repealing the citizen initiative. The Athens County Board of Elections filed support with the court — warning that if the candidates remain, two competing governments on Jan. 1 could disrupt basic county services.  WOUB Public Media
