Good morning, Athens. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 26th of September.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Cheddar is a charming 5-month-old orange tabby who loves to play and wrestle with his brother Colby—he is dog-friendly, fully litter trained, and eager to find his forever home. Athens Humane reports that he is ready to bring fun and affection to a new family.  Athens County Independent
  • A new community park installation at Chauncey-Dover Trailhead showcases the Chauncey Pet Memorial Rainbow Bridge with painted paw prints—southeast Ohioans who have lost a pet can hang a remembrance collar or tag along a cable on the path. The photo taken on Sept. 24 highlights this quiet place for remembering beloved pets.  Athens County Independent
  • Athens Area Stand Down will serve veterans and people experiencing homelessness by providing coats, blankets, hygiene products, and access to social services next Friday, Oct. 3 at the Athens County Fairgrounds from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will begin with a veteran-only session until noon—partner groups like Athens on Demand and Athens Public Transit are offering free transportation.  Athens County Independent

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Ohio’s economy loses $5 billion each year from low childcare coverage, which keeps many potential workers from joining the labor force in north central Ohio. Local groups in Knox and Ashland Counties are planning to open childcare centers—an effort to lower costs and improve quality for families.  WOUB Public Media

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Ohio University is revising its curriculum and faculty policies under Senate Bill 1, which will eliminate low-enrollment courses, modify majors, and update evaluations and workload standards (including a new American civics literacy course). Faculty worry that these changes might hurt the student experience and recruitment efforts (as seen in recent cuts to diversity and inclusion programs).  Athens County Independent
  • Ohio University’s Scripps College of Communication has unveiled its new LED Wall Shooting Studio on the fifth floor of the RTV Building—designed to give students hands-on experience with virtual production and digital cinema. The studio features a 21-foot by 12-foot LED wall made of 364 high-resolution panels—already used in projects for university athletics, WOUB Public Media and esports.  Ohio University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Ohio Supreme Court denied Nelsonville’s second motion for reconsideration in its election case involving the repeal of Issue 23 and removal of statutory races from the Nov. 4 ballot on Sept. 17 — leaving Ordinance 54-25 in effect and the races to be decided.  Athens County Independent
  • Athens City Council approved a zoning change to let The Gathering Place set up temporary Conestoga-style huts for housing support despite Law Director Lisa Eliason’s warning that the project might be spot zoning (a legal risk for inconsistent treatment of zoning areas). Council members and local residents stressed the need to address homelessness before winter and plan to move forward while reviewing guidelines for consistency.  Athens County Independent
  • The Ohio legislature cut the State Parks and Watercraft operating budget nearly in half—from $55 million to $27.7 million for 2026-27—raising concerns about fewer staff and reduced upkeep at parks like Strouds Run and Burr Oak. Community leaders worry the cuts will affect tourism revenue and may lead to higher costs and safety risks for Southeast Ohio.  The Post
