CULTURE NEWS

  • Emeritus Professor Daniel Torres will present his new book In the Empire of the Senses and hold a poetry reading at Little Professor Book Center on Oct. 16 at 6:30 p.m.—sponsored by the Department of Modern Languages, Latin American Studies, and Sigma Delta Pi with all local students, faculty, and community members invited.  Ohio University

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Ohio University Professor Natalie Kruse Daniels will lead a Science Café on Oct. 8 at 5 p.m. in the Baker University Center Front Room—she will discuss preparing for and responding to extreme weather in Appalachia and offer free beverage coupons to the first 50 attendees.  Ohio University
  • On Sept. 15, Dr. Laura L. Ellingson delivered the annual Boase Lecture at Ohio University where she shared personal experiences (including surviving cancer and an above-knee amputation) that shaped her research on embodiment in communication and encouraged students and faculty to value lived experience in their work.  Ohio University
  • Ohio University Eastern launched the new Rural Schools Collaborative Hub that unites campuses, educators and communities to strengthen the local teacher pipeline through place-based learning in rural areas—partnering with Building Bridges to Careers to bring in community-rooted STEAM Stories. The hub will create future opportunities for students and educators to work together and support rural schools.  Ohio University
  • Ohio University announced that its Athens Campus welcomed a record 4,550 first-year students as shown in the preliminary enrollment census—this record sets the stage for a strong start to the Fall semester.  The Athens Messenger

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Sept 24, the City of Athens announced that work began on a roundabout at SR 56 and SR 682. Drivers are advised to take an alternate route—traffic delays are expected during construction.  Athens County Independent
  • Athens County Sheriff Deputy Zayne Preston launched a confidential database called the Peaceful Encounter Program to help officers identify which topics to avoid during mental health crisis calls—aimed at reducing risks and de-escalating tense situations. The program went live recently and allows locals with mental health issues to share key personal information prior to officer contact.  WOUB Public Media

  • Ohio, the defending MAC champion since 1969, and Bowling Green, both with records of 2 wins and 2 losses, will open their conference season today in Athens at noon as Ohio aims to repeat its title & Bowling Green, under first-year coach Eddie George, seeks to capitalize on its all-time series lead.  WOUB Public Media
  • Jaylen Bannerman-Oden, a 2019 graduate from Ohio University, now works as an NFL scout for the Los Angeles Chargers—he covers college players across several states and uses his time at OHIO to guide his career.
