COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Volunteer firefighter Bob Funk Jr. and his family held a picnic Saturday — honoring the first responders who saved his life after a near-death experience in Glouster.  The Athens Messenger

CULTURE NEWS

  • During Hispanic Heritage Month, local advocates and groups at Ohio University stress that Puerto Ricans—U.S. citizens with limited rights—deserve full recognition for their cultural contributions and a greater voice in shaping their future. They call for greater inclusion and a break from the colonial legacy that has long restricted their participation.  The Post

EDUCATION NEWS

  • University College is updating its academic programs to better meet workforce needs and advance the Dynamic Strategy by launching new initiatives like reduced credit-hour degrees + lifelong learning offerings that will serve students, alumni, and professionals. The college leadership, led by Dean David Nguyen under Executive VP and Provost Donald J. Leo, is reorganizing student support units to improve services.  Ohio University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Sept. 24, the Ohio Supreme Court denied a motion from Nelsonville and the Athens County Board of Elections to decide whether Nelsonville will remain a charter city or become a statutory city starting Jan. 1 — leaving local officials and voters with legal uncertainty. Nelsonville City Council may address the issue at its Oct. 13 meeting as legal challenges continue.  Athens County Independent
  • Athens County voters will decide on November 4 whether to renew a sales tax levy—funding Athens County 911 for emergency services.  The Athens Messenger
  • The Bulletin Board lists public meetings scheduled from Tuesday, Sept. 30 through Monday, Oct. 5—covering sessions like the Athens County Board of Commissioners meeting on Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. and additional gatherings in Athens, Nelsonville, New Marshfield, Albany, Buchtel, Dover, Marietta, Glouster, Guysville, and Canaan. Notices for inclusion must be sent by noon on Fridays so that local residents can plan their attendance.  Athens County Independent
