COMMUNITY NEWS

  • UpCycle Ohio has opened its Breakerspace rage room at 751 W. Union St.—a new spot where Athens residents can relieve stress by breaking unwanted items and help reduce landfill waste, with sessions available for $25 for 15 minutes on Fridays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.  The Post
  • Athens County is hosting many fall events such as pumpkin carving, Octoberfest and a fungi festival—plus additional festivals and craft shows scheduled at local sites, with more updates as plans grow. Residents can enjoy hands-on celebrations and seasonal fun across the community.  Athens County Independent
  • Saturday, Oct. 11 will host the inaugural Amesville Homecoming Festival in the village with events like a community yard sale, soup cook-off, and pie contest. Organizer Brad Maxwell said proceeds will support fire department equipment and local charities.  Athens County Independent

CULTURE NEWS

  • Stuart’s Opera House presented the 2025 Happy Hollow Hootenanny at Snow Fork Event Center from Sept. 25 to 28, where multiple generations gathered for workshops, square dances, concerts and late-night jams—photographers Ethan Herx and Scotty Hall captured the festivities.  Athens County Independent
  • Living Traditions returns on Oct. 11 at the Federal Valley Resource Center—20853 School Road in Stewart to celebrate Appalachian culture with apple butter making, quilting, live music and folk art demonstrations. The free event will bring local artisans, children’s activities and museum tours to support time-honored practices.  Athens County Independent

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students from Ohio University's College of Business attended the annual Etiquette Dinner in September to learn proper dining etiquette and network with IGS Energy representatives. The event—sponsored by IGS Energy—gave students a chance to learn about sustainable practices and future internship opportunities.  Ohio University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Ohio Department of Transportation is nearly done building a new bike path that will join the Hockhocking Adena Bikeway to Chauncey and the Baileys Trail System by Nov. 1. The path will let bikers avoid the busy SR 682 (which carries over 3,000 vehicles a day) and connect local trail networks.  The Post
  • The Athens Planning Commission approved a revised rezoning plan on Wednesday to allow small neighborhood businesses along Columbus Road, duplex homes along Columbia and limit multifamily housing on a stretch of Lancaster—addressing residents' concerns over traffic and density.   • On Tuesday, Sept. 30th, 2025 in Glouster, two mayoral candidates and three school board candidates met with local voters at a roundtable hosted by the League of Women Voters of Athens County at Hocking Athens Perry Community Action on Cardaras Drive. Each candidate gave a two-minute statement before talking with community members about plans for public safety and school funding amid ongoing budget concerns — the forum helped explain the choices ahead.  Athens County Independent

HEALTH NEWS

  • Ohio cut lead abatement funds for fiscal year 2026 to $250,000 from $7.5 million and ended the Lead-Safe Home Fund while boosting the tax credit to $40,000 so property owners must address lead risks. Local health officials in Athens say homes built before 1975 and peeling lead paint pose a risk for children—testing and repairs are urged to prevent exposure.  The Post
