- ➤ For the 10th year, the Athens Area Stand Down event provided clothing, healthcare, career services and more to 75 to 100 veterans with over 20 agencies assisting—helping at-risk individuals receive essential support. - ➤ The Athena Cinema will show Bellini’s 'La Sonnambula' as part of The Met: Live in HD at 12:55 p.m. on Oct. 18. The annual series was revived by local opera supporters — local faculty and enthusiasts — and tickets are $20 for adults — $18 for seniors, $8 for children, and free for Ohio students with valid ID — on a first come, first served basis. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Mid-Ohio Valley Blues, Jazz, and Folk Music Society has started its Blues in the Schools program where Doug MacLeod—a Blues Music Award winner—teaches middle school students in Ohio and West Virginia, including at schools in Athens and Jackson counties, this week. The program links blues music to American history and gives many rural students their first chance to see live professional music. WOUB Public Media
- ➤ Dave and Cathy Levy donated to support the Chaddock + Morrow College of Fine Arts Capital Project when the college renamed the ceramics building—Levy Ceramics Studio—to honor their family legacy in arts. - ➤ Athens County plans to install a new sewer in New Marshfield to fix hundreds of leaky septic tanks—officials have put the project out to bid to improve local public health. The project will address long-standing issues with septic systems in the area. The Athens Messenger
