- ➤ Chance, a 7-25-25 male terrier mix weighing 36 pounds found at the West Side dog park, now leads yoga sessions at the Athens County Dog Shelter to help residents relax + he was once abandoned and is now available for adoption or fostering. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Ohio University invested tens of thousands of dollars in new technology for its Digital Cinema Initiative—helping students develop skills in filmmaking and broadcasting. The initiative will also create film job opportunities in our area. The Athens Messenger
- ➤ Ohio University's Center for Ecological and Evolutionary Studies will host conservationist and scientist Douglas W. Tallamy—currently a professor in the Department of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Delaware—on Oct.15 at 6:30 p.m. in Walter Hall room 135 as he explains global insect declines and steps to protect biodiversity. - ➤ On October 8, an Ohio University professor and documentary filmmaker, Tom Hayes, was detained when the Israeli military intercepted a nine-boat flotilla carrying international journalists and medical professionals on a humanitarian mission to aid Gaza. He was aboard the vessel Conscience+ part of the group challenging Israel’s naval blockade and planning another attempt to deliver aid. WOUB Public Media
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Athens City Council voted Monday to adopt Ordinance 0-111-25—allowing the city to refinance bonds on the swimming pool to save taxpayer dollars. The move is designed to protect city income tax funds. The Athens Messenger
- ➤ Athens County Commissioners discussed ways to boost efficiency at the Treasurer’s Office and reviewed plans for Winterfest—while addressing concerns over the ongoing government shutdown. They noted that further steps will be planned to manage the shutdown’s effects on county services. The Athens Messenger
