- ➤ New Marshfield’s Waterloo Fire Department is preparing its fifth trip to deliver supplies—including canned food, clothing, and essentials—to Hurricane Helene survivors in North Carolina, with donations collected at local EMS stations, a coffee shop, and other venues. - ➤ Local nonprofit HAPCAP helps low-income residents in Athens by using programs that offer home weatherization, food access, child care, and transit services—keeping homes warmer and safer during colder seasons. The agency also secured a $2 million grant to convert the former Sunset Motel into a shelter and provides microloans along with financial counseling to help residents avoid high-interest payday loans. - ➤ The Ohio University Student Senate met on Wednesday at 7:15 p.m. in Walter 145 and appointed new senators for roles including Women's Affairs, Resident Life, Public Relations, and Judicial Panel while approving budgets for event supplies for a media literacy and Day of the Dead event. - ➤ Ohio University Board of Trustees will meet at Walter Hall 104 on Oct 16 and Oct 17 to learn how nursing program expansions help boost jobs and enrollment while reviewing preliminary FY 2025 results and faculty research—officials will also update the board on student programs, investment funds, and planned facility repairs. - ➤ At its meeting on Monday, Athens City Council voted to refinance $4.9 million in swimming pool bonds at a lower interest rate to help the city save money. The refinancing, set to be completed by December, will create a new payment plan for the pool debt, which is scheduled to be fully repaid by December 2035 (a similar move in the past saved up to $350,000). - ➤ Gov. Mike DeWine paused sales of cannabinoid products with delta-8 THC on October 8 by signing an executive order that redefines hemp and declares an adulterated consumer product emergency — retailers must remove these products by October 14 and face a 90-day ban. WOUB Public Media

- ➤ Vaccines for COVID—19, flu, and RSV are available this fall at local pharmacies, urgent care sites, and the Athens City—County Health Department on West Union Street.
