- ➤ HAPCAP is offering help to Athens County residents to pay heating bills as winter approaches so they can stay warm. The program will assist eligible residents before the cold sets in. The Athens Messenger
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ After graduating from Ohio University in 2013 with a degree in early childhood education, Megan Albers took a grand adventure to Camp Laurel in Maine where she learned to work with kids and became the program director—she now plans to run her own camp someday. Ohio University
- ➤ Ohio University will celebrate Homecoming Week from Oct. 13 to Oct. 18 with events including a parade in uptown Athens (main street route) and a football game against Northern Illinois on Oct. 18 at Frank Solich Field at Peden Stadium. Parade registration ends on Oct. 9 (11:59 p.m.) and all students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members are invited to join the festivities. Ohio University
- ➤ Alumni, students and community partners raised nearly $40,000 during the Thomas Lonsbury Memorial Scholarship Event on September 18-19 to support scholarships for Ohio University's J. Warren McClure School of Emerging Communication Technologies—this fundraiser featured a pre-event at Great American Ball Park and a golf outing at Athens Country Club that added to the legacy of Thomas Lonsbury. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ July brought nearly 9 inches of rain to Athens, and an Ohio University expert said that past weather patterns no longer predict future flood risks—communities on floodplains and with limited resources are more at risk. The expert recommended building social connections and using green storm management to better handle heavy rains—local planners may soon adopt these more resilient strategies. WOUB Public Media

- ➤ Ohio Field Hockey hosted Ball State for their Pink Out game on Friday, October 10 and won 1—0 after Tiana Nhamoinesu scored her first goal while both teams played strong defense. The Bobcats will face Kent State on the road on October 17. WOUB Public Media
