CULTURE NEWS

  • School of Visual Communication alumnus Justin Herman will open his Design: Love and Service exhibition at VisCom Focus Gallery on Oct.22 and will deliver an artist talk at 5:30 p.m. in Schoonover Center 145. The show runs through Nov.14 and features his work from MTV promos and hip-hop collaborations—highlighting how design can serve as both art and communication.  Ohio University
  • On Tuesday (October 14th), the City of Athens Arts, Parks and Recreation Department unveiled a sculpture pocket park at the Athens Community Center (marking its 25th anniversary).  The Athens Messenger

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Vitruvian is training students, individuals aging out of foster care, and former bricklayers in 3D printing construction in Chauncey through a digital masonry program certified by the state in partnership with the Survivor Advocacy Outreach Program & International Union of Bricklayers Local 23. The program, launched this summer, aims to offer a no-debt pathway into apprenticeships as construction technology evolves.  Athens County Independent
  • Historian Tara Zahra will give the 47th Annual Costa Lecture on anti-globalism then and now on October 23 at 7:30 p.m. in Walter Hall 135—this free talk will include a pre-lecture reception beginning at 7 p.m. for all students, faculty, staff and community members.  Ohio University
  • Ohio University students gained hands-on experience at the Shoop Paleo-Indian site in Pennsylvania during a four-week field school program held this summer. They learned excavation, artifact analysis, and field research while working with faculty and volunteers—preparing them for careers in archaeology.  Ohio University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Oct.15, the Ohio Department of Transportation held a public meeting at the Athens ODOT Garage about planned blasting for the US 33 expansion between Athens and Darwin. Upcoming events include a fall recycling day and OU homecoming parking on Oct.18 plus a public potluck celebration for Rick O’Keefe, while several road projects and released audits and ordinances affect local traffic and services through early November.  Athens County Independent
  • At an Oct. 9 meeting, city officials scrapped a proposal to reduce tree planting standards after the Shade Tree Commission and local residents raised concerns about shifting approval authority from the commission. The revised code change now maintains current urban canopy requirements while moving development reviews to the Planning Commission (officials say this will streamline the process).  Athens County Independent

  • Elsa, a dog from the Athens Shelter who was left behind after her human died, has slowly been healing through regular walks with volunteers & enjoying treats like string cheese. She now helps comfort new shelter dogs and is looking for a foster or adopter; call the Athens County Dog Shelter at 740-593-5415 to meet her.  Athens County Independent
  • Foster care for kittens Saturn—also known as Sandy—and Mercury—nicknamed Buttercup—says the pair are healthy, use their litter boxes, and are ideal for adoption together or with another cat to help them learn and play.  Athens County Independent

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Survivor Advocacy Outreach Program and Vitruvian are constructing three 3D-printed homes in Chauncey to provide affordable, energy-efficient housing for survivors and first-time buyers—using a concrete-like material made from recycled waste. The homes, funded by an Appalachian Community Grant from the Ohio Department of Development, are expected to be finished in a few months.  Athens County Independent
