COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Athens City Council formed a new housing committee to boost rental code enforcement since about 75% of homes are rentals. Attorney Caitlyn McDaniel earned the Ohio State Bar Foundation’s 2025 Community Service Award and Mount Zion Black Cultural Center received a $60K grant to upgrade its entrance — actions that address local housing and community needs.  Athens County Independent
  • SNAP benefits have stopped since Nov. 1 because of a government shutdown, so local food pantries are preparing for more neighbors needing help. The Athens County Food Pantry now packs food five or six times a week—officials expect more people to come for assistance as the cuts continue.  The Post

  • Glamor-Us opened on 79 E State St. on Oct. 3 to offer affordable beauty supplies for Athens locals and Ohio University students—Store manager Trish Peck said the shop features popular brands and lower prices compared to larger stores.  The Post

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The OU Creative Writing Program will host a virtual reading by Irish nonfiction writer Kerri ní Dochartaigh at Walter Hall Rotunda on November 6 at 5 p.m.—she is the second visiting writer of this academic year and the event highlights the program's ongoing efforts to engage local creative writing students.  WOUB Public Media
  • Voters in Athens County elected new school board members for the Federal Hocking and Trimble Local School Districts as challengers Mary Mitchell, Gem S. Stone, and Angela R. Williams won seats while Trimble reelected incumbents and chose challenger Carl Fouts—Fred Davis also won the at-large seat on the Athens-Meigs Educational Service Center board and the new boards aim to secure a permanent superintendent and improve services.  Athens County Independent

  • Today, Ohio University Football beat Miami 24-20 at Peden Stadium when Rodney Harris II caught a 49‐yard touchdown and Jalen Thomeson made a key interception to secure the win + the Bobcats will travel to Kalamazoo on Nov. 11.  WOUB Public Media
