- ➤ Athens County is gearing up for a busy winter season as local organizers schedule events from community tree lighting on Dec. 5 in Uptown Athens to Christmas parades, open houses and concerts in nearby towns—each offering a chance for families and residents to celebrate together. - ➤ Athens artist Jessica Held leads art projects for local kids and seniors by running weekly after-school classes and hosting art shows at area libraries—one display at Nelsonville runs until November 17. She will also offer eight-week Creative Aging programs for adults in January and February and plans a park installation set for spring to bring more creative opportunities to the community. - ➤ Dr. Tee was awarded the 2025 Black Appalachian Storytellers fellowship by the National Association of Black Storytellers—she will use the $5,000 grant and membership benefits to help fund renovations at Mount Zion Black Cultural Center in Athens and continue work on Black Wall Street Athens. The fellowship recognizes her contributions as communications director and professor emerita and supports the center’s upcoming opening in October 2026. Athens County Independent
