CULTURE NEWS

  • Dan Harmon—a Dawson-Bryant High School teacher and Cherokee descendant—will host Native Leaders of the Ohio Valley at Bowman Auditorium on Nov. 14 from 9 a.m. to noon at Ohio University’s Southern campus to share Indigenous history and discuss Shawnee chiefs. The program, part of Native American Heritage Month, will mark the long history and struggles of the area's first peoples.  The Post
  • Lithuanian violinist Martynas Švėgžda von Bekker will join OHIO’s Algis Mickunas & Vladimir Marchenkov for Philosophy and Performance today at Glidden Recital Hall. He will perform a violin recital and take part in a discussion on art and meaning from 3:30 to 5 p.m.  Ohio University

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Veteran Jay Johnson, director of the Voinovich Academy for Excellence in Public Service on the Dublin Campus, celebrated nine years at the academy and more than 40 years in public service. He retired as a colonel in 2016 after 33 years in the Marine Corps—now he teaches strategic leadership and works with local nonprofits to aid veterans.  Ohio University
  • Ohio University's communication and development studies program welcomed its largest and most international class this fall with 26 students from 16 countries, including 18 first-year students, three Fulbright scholars and one Crane Fellow. The program, started in 1986, now has global partnerships and plans to expand community projects — linking local learning with global ideas.  Ohio University

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Residents can use the new Recycling Trail created by the Athens-Hocking Solid Waste District to find maps and guides that help reduce, reuse and recycle items. The online program—linking trails for donations, vintage shopping and automotive waste—also supports recycling events held throughout the area.  Athens County Independent

  • AthensHumane introduces Otto, a 12-week-old brown, black and grey mackerel tabby who loves to cuddle on a soft blanket with his foster mom—he plays with wands, spring toys and fuzzy mice while showing perfect litter box manners.  Athens County Independent

SPORTS NEWS

  • Ohio Football lost 17 to 13 to Western Michigan in Kalamazoo on November 12 after Parker Navarro struggled and threw an early interception that set up a long drive. Western Michigan scored a 71‐yard game‐winning touchdown — leaving the Bobcats set to host UMass next week at 7 p.m.  WOUB Public Media
