Good morning, Athens. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 22nd of November.

CULTURE NEWS

  • David Butcher leads a project with the Voinovich School to transform a polluted former mine site — once used for coal mining — into a museum and community center near Tablertown in Rome Township. Bids took place in early September and tree removal began in October, and contractors will grade and cap the site by spring or early summer to create space for recreation and a water tap for local residents.  Ohio University
  • Local vocalist Showing Teeth built her career by recording raw demos in her car and posting clips online that mix loud deathcore with honest emotion. She released her debut single Labyrinth on November 14 and uses spots like a church parking lot to craft her sound — a self-made path in music.  WOUB Public Media
  • The Visual Discovery Conference is a five-day cultural exchange where design students and faculty from around the world work together to tell visual stories that capture the host city's unique character—an initiative launched in 2018 by Ohio University and Augsburg University. The program featured 83 students and 14 educators in 2025 and will next convene at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, offering international collaboration and a competitive showcase of creative projects.  Ohio University

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Three Ohio University art students won a t-shirt design contest that celebrated Athens wildlife and campus landmarks — winners Ella Chandler, Jalynn Eberts and Jordyn Roderick each earned a $1,000 scholarship, and their shirts are now available for $22.99 on the Bobcat Depot website.  Ohio University
  • Ohio University offers an esports certificate program to train students in game design, IT, and business so they can work in a growing digital sports field—where roles include broadcasters, dietitians, and other experts. Students gain hands-on experience in production and event coordination during college competitions to meet the rising demand in esports.  Ohio University
  • Ohio University Professor Eric Williams will lead a Science Café event on Dec. 3 at 5 p.m. in the Baker University Center Front Room where he will discuss How to Bend Minds: OU, VR and the FBI — the event invites the OHIO community to attend in person or via livestream.  Ohio University
